John 1:1-3 "The Word"

John 1:1-3 NASB In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. (2) He was in the beginning with God. (3) All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being.

Ok Ok .... that sounds weird right? In the beginning was the Word? What Word you say? First, where have you heard that phrase "In the Beginning" in the Bible before?

Genesis 1:1 NASB
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

In the beginning God. There was a time when there was "nothing". There was no world, no time. BUT there was God. He has always been. Tough concept. Well try on the atheist's idea for a second. Atheists believe either in "eternal matter" (matter has always existed) or they believe "nothing" became something. WOW..sounds crazy? You bet!! Both take "faith". Either faith in "nothing" or faith in God. I'll stick with faith in an Eternal God thank you!!

This is a tough concept to get your mind around isn't it? But God has always been, even before "the beginning".

In the Old Testament when God would talk directly to people, or through profits and angels it was referred to as "the Word of the Lord"

Genesis 15:1 NASB
After these things the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision, saying, "Do not fear, Abram, I am a shield to you; Your reward shall be very great."
Numbers 36:5 NASB
Then Moses commanded the sons of Israel according to the word of the LORD, saying, "The tribe of the sons of Joseph are right in their statements.
1 Samuel 3:21 NASB
And the LORD appeared again at Shiloh, because the LORD revealed Himself to Samuel at Shiloh by the word of the LORD.
1 Kings 6:11 NASB
Now the word of the LORD came to Solomon saying,
Isaiah 1:10 NASB
Hear the word of the LORD, You rulers of Sodom; Give ear to the instruction of our God, You people of Gomorrah.

You get the picture. When God spoke it was "The Word" of God. Just like the Bible is "the Word" of God. So, when John wrote the Gospel of John, he referred to Jesus as "the Word". Later verses John refers to "The Word" becoming flesh and lived among us.

"The Word was with God and the Word WAS God"

The second part is pretty simple. "The Word" IS God. But the first part is harder to comprehend. The Word was also WITH God. How can something be with something and also be that something? If you try to figure it out you will go crazy. Here we use that word again. It's called faith. You've got to have have faith that Jesus IS God at the same time He is WITH God. The Trinity.

The "Father" is God, the "Son" is God and the "Holy Spirit" is God. BUT the Father is not the Son or the Holy Spirit, the Son is not the Father or the Holy Spirit and the Holy Spirit is not the Father or the Son. BUT all three are God!! Got a headache yet thinking about that?? FAITH!!

The terms typically used are "Three Persons" or "Three in One", but neither is descriptive to describe a Holy and Perfect God. Because God is so AWESOME we can't even comprehend Him with these feeble little minds that we have. The concept of "God" is indescribable.

"All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being."

If saying "the Word was God" isn't enough to show that Jesus is God, John went a step farther to clarify. He said that "the Word" created EVERYTHING!! Wait Genesis said GOD created EVERYTHING?? Oh yea, Jesus IS God. In Genesis God actually talks to Himself too when making man.

Genesis 1:26 NASB
Then God said, "Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth."
